Governor Maura Healey delivered her third State of the Commonwealth address on January 22, 2026, focusing on affordability, infrastructure, and standing strong for Massachusetts values amid national challenges.
Several announcements directly benefit Western Massachusetts—from bridge repairs to energy relief and veterans' services. Here's what matters most for our region:
Major Infrastructure Boost
The Governor unveiled an $8 billion plan to modernize roads, bridges, and transit. A key win for us: 27 bridges in Western Massachusetts will see accelerated repairs, improving safety and connectivity across the Berkshires and Pioneer Valley.
She also announced the upcoming dedication of the Bob Cousy Pass (the I-290 bridge) in Worcester—honoring the Celtics legend.
Energy Relief Heading Our Way
Winter bills hit hard in the 413, but relief is coming:
- 25% off electric bills and 10% off gas bills for residential customers in February and March.
- A new hydroelectric transmission line from Canada (now operational) supplying about 20% of the state's power and saving $50 million annually.
- Opposition to utility rate hikes plus legislation projected to save ratepayers $13 billion overall.
These steps will provide real breathing room during our cold months.
Housing Affordability Push
To make the 413 more attainable for families and young professionals:
- Aggressive goals to build more homes faster (100,000 already in progress statewide), including repurposing state land and converting offices to apartments.
- Strong support for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) with low-cost financing and free designs.
- Expanded down-payment assistance and lower-interest loans for first-time buyers.
Education, Workforce, and Community Investments
- Expansion of Early College programs, including new partnerships in Springfield.
- Goal of 100,000 new apprenticeships over 10 years in high-demand fields like healthcare and manufacturing—great fits for our local economy.
- Increased funding for food banks and support to ensure SNAP benefits reach those in need.
- The Holyoke Veterans' Home is now rebuilt, fully accredited, and earning a perfect VA rating—one of the best in the country.
The Governor also highlighted bans on medical debt reporting to credit agencies, strong reproductive care protections, and continued investments in veterans' services (including efforts to end veteran homelessness).
Looking Forward
With a message of unity and resilience—celebrating Massachusetts' role in America's 250th anniversary—the address underscored tangible progress for regions like ours.
