Tragic House Fire Claims Two Lives on Silver Street in Monson

MONSON, MA â€” A devastating three-alarm fire tore through a residence at 275 Silver Street on the evening of February 19, 2026, claiming the lives of two people and requiring a massive mutual aid response from across Western Massachusetts.

The Hampden County District Attorney's Office and State Fire Marshal confirmed the fatalities following the blaze that began at approximately 4:30 PM on Thursday afternoon.

Timeline of Events

The Monson Fire and Police Departments received the initial alert at 4:31:30 PM from Westcomm Regional Dispatch after 911 callers reported flames at the rear of a house near 278 Silver Street. Using cutting-edge Prepared Live technology, dispatchers were able to view real-time video from callers' cell phones, providing critical situational awareness to responding units.

Within three minutes, at 4:34:40 PM, Fire Chief Brian Harris upgraded the response to a second alarm after receiving updates about the rapidly deteriorating conditions.

Heroic Rescue Attempts

When Chief Harris arrived at 4:41:24 PM, he found Monson Police officers already attempting a dangerous rescue operation. Two officers tried to enter through the front door to reach trapped occupants but were driven back by heavy smoke and extreme heat. A third officer arrived shortly after and also attempted to assist in the rescue efforts.

"The two officers attempted to make entry through the front door and were met with heavy smoke and extreme heat conditions; they were forced to retreat after a short period of time," Chief Harris wrote in his official incident report released February 21.

The two officers who entered the burning structure have been recovering from smoke inhalation, according to Western Mass News.

Massive Firefighting Operation

Palmer and Wilbraham Fire Departments were first to arrive for mutual aid and launched an aggressive interior attack while searching for victims. However, rapidly deteriorating conditions forced crews to switch to defensive exterior operations.

The fire's complexity was compounded by the structure's location in an area without municipal water service, requiring tanker trucks to shuttle water from more than a quarter-mile away. The incident eventually escalated to a third alarm, bringing:

  • 6 engines
  • 6 tankers
  • 4 ambulances
  • 5 command vehicles
  • Over 70 personnel

It took several hours to bring the blaze under control due to the building's size and water supply challenges.

Investigation Ongoing

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the State Police assigned to the State Fire Marshal's Office, the State Police Detective Unit for Hampden County, and the Monson Police and Fire Departments.

The Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is working to determine the victims' identities and cause of death. As of Tuesday, authorities have not publicly released the names of the deceased.

Community Response

Chief Harris expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community while acknowledging the tragedy's profound impact.

"We appreciate everyone that has been reaching out to us. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families and our condolences go out to anyone impacted by this tragedy," Harris stated in his official report.

NBC Boston described the incident as a "heartbreaking tragedy" for the small Western Massachusetts community.

The response involved extensive cooperation from regional departments and agencies, including:

  • Palmer, Wilbraham, Brimfield, Bondsville, Ludlow, Wales, and Hampden Fire Departments
  • Action Brimfield and Action Hampden Ambulance services
  • Massachusetts State Fire Marshal's Office
  • Hampden County District Attorney's Office
