Massachusetts residents have until April 30 to apply for financial assistance with winter heating bills through the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP).
HEAP offers grants paid directly to heating providers, helping eligible households manage a portion of their winter energy costs.
The aid does not require repayment.
This past winter ranked among the coldest in three decades, with Boston recording average temperatures 3 degrees below normal.
The persistent chill drove up heating usage, leaving many facing higher utility bills as the season ends.
Juana Matias, Secretary of Housing and Livable Communities, encourages residents to apply for support or inform others who may benefit before the deadline.
HEAP is available to renters and homeowners statewide, with eligibility based on household size and income—up to 60 percent of the state median.
The program covers all heating sources, regardless of whether the cost is included in rent. Read More... |

Funwayo Mbilini Nyawo, a 37-year-old Wilbraham resident, was sentenced to 32 months in federal prison for posting violent threats online targeting public officials, private citizens, and children across Massachusetts.
Nyawo’s case was heard by U.S. District Court Judge Mark G. Mastroianni in Springfield, who also imposed three years of supervised release following the prison term.
Nyawo pleaded guilty to 13 counts of interstate transmission of threatening communications and one count of stalking after using X (formerly Twitter) to threaten officials, families, first responders, shopping malls, schools, and children from July to October 2024.
Authorities say his campaign included direct intimidation and harassment, urging violence by terrorist organizations and relentlessly targeting one federal official and their family.
The coordinated investigation included the FBI’s Boston Division, Wilbraham Police, and other agencies.
Nyawo faces strict probation rules upon release, with more prison time possible for any violations. Read More... |
April marks National 911 Education Month, shining a spotlight on the Silent Call Procedure — a potentially lifesaving tool for those unable to speak during emergencies.
The protocol allows Massachusetts residents to request help discreetly by pressing keypad numbers after dialing 911, crucial in situations like domestic violence, home invasions, or medical crises impairing speech.
When the dispatcher answers, callers can press #1 for police, #2 for fire, or #3 for ambulance.
Answer yes or no questions with #4 and #5, helping responders quickly pinpoint your needs.
This system is used throughout Massachusetts, including Chicopee and several Western MA communities served by WESTCOMM Regional Dispatch.
Even without keypad input, first responders will be sent to your location for safety.
Share this knowledge with loved ones—knowing these simple steps can make a critical difference when every second matters. Read More... |
