HOLYOKE, MA â Mayor Joshua A. Garcia has launched a month-long âHolyoke Positive Reporting Challengeâ, urging local news outlets to spotlight uplifting stories about the city throughout February.
Three major outletsâWestern Mass News, WWLP-22News, and MassLiveâwill compete to publish ten positive stories first, with the aim of balancing public perception of Holyoke.
Garcia emphasized the challenge is not meant to stifle criticism or undermine accurate journalism, but to celebrate achievements, community programs, and neighborhood improvements.
His office will track and share weekly story tallies, highlighting coverage on public safety, local businesses, youth events, and cultural milestones.
Residents are encouraged to submit their own inspiring stories, fostering a collective push for positive attention.

Abraham Heredia, 25, of Springfield, has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for distributing fentanyl across Western Massachusetts.
U.S. District Court Judge Mark G. Mastroianni imposed the mandatory minimum after Herediaâs guilty plea to conspiring to distribute over 400 grams of fentanyl.
Heredia acted as a supplier between November 2022 and June 2023, providing mid-level dealers with large amounts of fentanyl to reach street-level users.
Authorities halted the operation in June 2023, intercepting nearly 1.5 kilograms of fentanyl â enough for roughly 750,000 potentially fatal doses, according to federal estimates.
After his prison sentence, Heredia faces five years of supervised release with conditions to prevent any return to drug trafficking.
