Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll toured all four Western Massachusetts counties on 413 Day, unveiling major investments in housing, workforce development, and outdoor recreation.

413 Day, inspired by the region’s 413 area code, celebrates Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden, and Hampshire counties while spotlighting state initiatives tailored to the local community.

This year, six Western Massachusetts communities received Housing Choice designation, opening access to grants and technical assistance for affordable housing.

Nearly $8 million in Neighborhood Stabilization funds will help redevelop dozens of affordable homes.

The administration also announced $14.4 million for the YouthWorks program, creating almost 3,800 jobs statewide for young people.

Efforts to ensure funding fairness included the swearing-in of the PILOT Commission, which aims to reform payments to towns hosting tax-exempt state land.

Massachusetts’ outdoor economy is now the fastest growing in the nation, generating over $14 billion annually.

Regional equity remains a clear focus, as state leaders invest in Western Mass communities’ long-term growth.

The catastrophic flood of March 1936 transformed Hatfield’s renowned tobacco fields, as the Connecticut River unleashed its might across the Valley.

Triggered by relentless rain, rapid snowmelt, and ice jams, the flood swallowed farms just as growers prepared for the new season, delivering historic devastation to communities like Hatfield and Northampton.

Where lush rows of tobacco had thrived, muddy debris and standing water now covered the landscape.

Farm buildings and bare trees stood as silent witnesses under turbulent skies.

The Valley, once famed for its premium shade-grown tobacco, was forced to acknowledge its vulnerability.

In the aftermath, efforts to safeguard farmland—through levees and dams—began reshaping local flood management.

This historic moment endures as a testament to the resilience of Western Massachusetts’ farmers and the enduring power of the river on the region’s legacy.

Word of the Week: Mesmerizing

Definition: Adjective. So fascinating, beautiful, or captivating that it holds your complete attention, as if you’re gently spellbound and can’t look away. It describes something that draws you in with an almost hypnotic charm.

Example Sentence: The way the morning light filtered through the new spring leaves was mesmerizing — each tiny movement created shifting patterns of gold and green that made the whole garden feel alive and magical.

Origin: Named after Franz Mesmer, an 18th-century doctor who developed the theory of “animal magnetism.” The word entered English in the early 1800s and evolved from meaning “hypnotized” to describing anything that deeply fascinates and enchants us.

It’s a richer, slightly less common word that adds a touch of wonder to everyday moments.

What’s been mesmerizing you this week? ✨
