The Town of West Springfield is actively recruiting dedicated residents to fill key volunteer positions on several municipal boards and committees, offering opportunities to influence local policies on zoning, environmental protection, cultural programs, and more.
Announced on November 19, these vacancies provide a direct way for community members to contribute to town governance and support essential services.
The roles span a variety of focus areas, with applications open to all interested West Springfield residents. Here's a breakdown of the available positions:
- Board of Appeals (Zoning) – Two Alternate Member Vacancies This board interprets zoning regulations, grants permits for variances, and handles appeals to ensure fair application of laws. Alternates step in during hearings to maintain continuity.
- Commission on Disabilities – Two Vacancies Formed under state law, the commission promotes inclusion for individuals with disabilities by advising on policies, coordinating services, and reviewing town facilities for compliance. Preference is given to applicants with disabilities or immediate family members of those with disabilities.
- Conservation Commission – Three Vacancies Tasked with upholding the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act, the commission reviews development impacts on natural resources like wetlands and floodplains, while supporting open space planning and environmental education.
- Cultural Council – One Vacancy Members distribute state-funded grants to support local arts, humanities, and science initiatives, including public events and educational programs. Terms last three years.
- Historical Commission – Two Alternate Member Vacancies Focused on preserving historic sites, the commission surveys assets, installs markers, creates tours, and digitizes archives. Alternates assist as needed.
- Library Board of Trustees – One Vacancy In an advisory role to town leadership, the board guides library operations, policies, and budgeting to meet community needs and promote innovative services.
- Redevelopment Authority – One Vacancy Under state guidelines, the authority addresses blighted areas through planning and projects aimed at economic revitalization and neighborhood improvements.
- Veterans Advisory Board – Two Vacancies This board organizes Memorial Day and Veterans' Day events, selects the annual "Veteran of the Year," and supports other patriotic activities. Eligible applicants include veterans, Gold Star family members, or members of veteran support organizations.
