Easthampton, MA

In a move that's sure to make even the Grinch's heart grow three sizes, the Easthampton Police Department is bringing Dr. Seuss-inspired holiday cheer to the community with a commemorative patch that transforms the city into Whoville for the season. The limited-edition design debuts December 10, featuring the city's beloved landmarks adorned with festive touches.

The patch centers on the department's official seal, showcasing Nashawannuck Pond and Mt. Tom. Holiday magic comes alive through two additions: a glowing star crowning the mountain peak and a decorated tree floating on the pond. These elements mirror real holiday displays that light up Easthampton each winter, creating a scene that residents have long associated with the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss.

"We couldn't miss out on the opportunity to include our famous star atop the mountain, and the tree on the pond," the department shared on social media, inviting the community to embrace the seasonal spirit.

The Whoville Connection

Easthampton's ties to Dr. Seuss run deeper than holiday decorations. The beloved author, born Theodor Seuss Geisel in nearby Springfield on March 2, 1904, spent his formative years in the Pioneer Valley. Local tradition holds that Easthampton's scenic charm, from its pondside parks to Mt. Tom's silhouette, inspired the fictional town of Whoville in How the Grinch Stole Christmas! While this connection remains community lore rather than documented fact, it has shaped the city's holiday identity for years.

The patch launch follows the 12th Annual Easthampton Holiday Whobalation, held December 7 from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at Millside Park. Families gathered for live music, visits from Santa and the Grinch (escorted by the Easthampton Fire Department), and a toy drive that filled the evening with community warmth. Under strings of lights and winter skies, the event reinforced why residents embrace their city's Whoville nickname each December.

How to Get Your Patch

Patches go on sale December 10 at the Public Safety Complex, located at 50 Payson Avenue, priced at $10 each. They will also be available this weekend during the department's 3rd Annual Stuff-A-Cruiser Food and Toy Drive at Big E's Supermarket (261 Northampton Street). The drive runs Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, collecting food and toys for families in need.

All patch proceeds and drive donations support the Easthampton Community Center, helping provide holiday assistance to local families. The department notes supplies are limited, encouraging early purchases for those wanting this first-ever commemorative design.

Whether you're drawn to the Dr. Seuss connection, the local landmarks, or simply supporting a good cause, the patch offers a tangible piece of Easthampton's holiday tradition. Stop by the Public Safety Complex on Tuesday or visit Big E's this weekend to pick one up while contributing to the season's spirit of giving.
