BJ's Wholesale Club Opens at Springfield Crossing, Drawing Eager Crowds on First Day

SPRINGFIELD, MA — The transformation of Springfield's retail landscape took another major step forward as BJ's Wholesale Club officially opened its doors at the newly developed Springfield Crossing shopping center, the site of the former Eastfield Mall.

Arriving at 6:30 p.m. on opening day, December 12th, this reporter found a bustling scene that spoke to the pent-up demand for convenient wholesale shopping in Springfield. The parking lot was packed to capacity, with the last available space located near the entrance road — though the walk to the store proved mercifully short.

The new location immediately distinguishes itself with a bright, welcoming interior and an architectural feature not found at the nearby Chicopee location: employee offices situated on a second floor overlooking the sales floor. A tire center, visible from the parking lot and well-illuminated, appeared closed during the evening hours.

Despite the opening day chaos one might expect, the store's operations ran surprisingly smoothly. Lines at the membership center stretched to the door, yet staff processed customers efficiently. This reporter obtained a replacement membership card with minimal wait time, a testament to the team's preparedness.

What stood out most was the professionalism of the staff. Though presumably new to this location, employees appeared well-trained and eager to assist shoppers navigating the warehouse-style aisles. Customers moved courteously through the store, exploring departments and filling carts as they discovered the breadth of merchandise available.

As shoppers exited, staff members distributed goodie bags filled with product samples — a welcoming touch that added to the festive opening day atmosphere.

The new BJ's anchors the Springfield Crossing development, which is breathing new life into the former Eastfield Mall property. The shopping center already includes a BJ's gas station that opened prior to the warehouse club, along with a PetSmart and a Chick-fil-A that appeared to be doing brisk business Friday evening. A Hobby Lobby is also planned for the complex.

For Springfield residents, the new location offers a more convenient alternative to driving to the BJ's in Chicopee or the Costco in West Springfield. The addition represents a significant retail investment in the city and provides local shoppers with expanded options for bulk purchasing and wholesale savings.

As the evening crowds demonstrated, Springfield was ready for this opening — and BJ's appeared equally ready to serve them.
