"New Police Chief Maddalena Shakes Up Law Enforcement - Change on the Horizon"

Pittsfield Names Marc Maddalena as New Police Chief After 28 Years on ForcePittsfield has a new police chief. Mayor Peter Marchetti announced March 4, 2026, that Marc Maddalena, a 28-year veteran of the Pittsfield Police Department, will permanently lead the force. Maddalena succeeds former Chief Thomas Dawley and becomes the department's top commander after rising through the ranks from patrol officer to lieutenant over nearly three decades. A Career Built in PittsfieldMaddalena joined the Pittsfield Police Department in 1998 as a patrol officer. Over the years, he advanced to sergeant and then lieutenant, where he managed the Traffic Division and supervised the evening shift. The Traffic Division specializes in traffic safety education and investigating motor vehicle crashes. Beyond his supervisory duties, Maddalena served in several specialized roles throughout his career, including DARE Officer, RAD Instructor, and CPR Instructor. He also acted as liaison to the city's Licensing Board, Traffic Commission, and Taxicab Commission. His service has earned recognition, including the Save Award from Western Massachusetts Emergency Medical Services and two letters of commendation from the Pittsfield Police Department. Education and QualificationsMaddalena holds a master's degree in public administration from Anna Maria College and earned his bachelor's degree from North Adams State College, now known as Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. A Lifelong Connection to PittsfieldFor Maddalena, the appointment represents more than a career milestone. He has lived in Pittsfield his entire life. "I am honored for the opportunity to serve as the Chief of Police for the city that I have proudly called home for my entire life," Maddalena said at the announcement. "I look forward to serving and giving back to the community that has helped raise me as well as supporting the dedicated professionals of this police department." Mayor Marchetti praised the appointment, highlighting Maddalena's experience and leadership within the department. "Marc has been a dedicated member of the department for many years and has shown tremendous leadership through the divisions he has led," Marchetti said. "He is respected by his colleagues, and I look forward to our work together in this new role." Support from Law Enforcement PartnersThe announcement drew support from law enforcement officials across Berkshire County. District Attorney Timothy Shugrue congratulated Maddalena on the appointment, noting his dedication to Pittsfield residents throughout his career. Sheriff Thomas Bowler, who worked with Maddalena for several years at the Pittsfield Police Department, emphasized his collaborative approach and the respect he has earned from peers. "As Sheriff of Berkshire County, I can speak to his leadership qualities, his willingness to collaborate with our agency and other municipalities to ensure the safety of the citizens of Pittsfield and Berkshire County, and most importantly, the respect he has earned from his peers over the years," Bowler said. "He will serve the City of Pittsfield well and I will be honored to refer to him as Chief Maddalena."
