Hampden Select Board Selects Sgt. Daniel Bruno as New Police Chief

SGT. Bruno Makes the news again

The Hampden Select Board unanimously appointed East Longmeadow Police Detective Sgt. Daniel Bruno as the town's next police chief during a recent meeting, pending the successful completion of background, psychological, and medical examinations.

The decision followed an intensive search that yielded three strong internal and local candidates: Sgt. Bruno, Capt. Mark Massafarro, and Sgt. Carl Ivonne. Board members repeatedly emphasized the caliber of the applicants, with one noting, "We were fortunate to have three candidates that I think any of them if they were the only candidate we would be fine with picking, but we can only pick one."

Select Board Chair Eric highlighted the intimate scale of Hampden's 5,000-resident community, stressing the need for a leader deeply embedded in local life. "The position of chief is something that has to be for the town of Hampden – somebody who's really invested in our particular community," he said. "This has to be a person that loves being chief in Hampden." Referencing the recent retirements of beloved former Chiefs Joy and Stone – described as a "tremendous loss" – Eric underscored the chief's direct accountability to the board and residents in a department far smaller than those in urban centers like Boston.

Sgt. Bruno stood out for his long-term residency and commitment to the town's future. "What I got from the interview was that this was a person who wanted to help Hampden grow, but stay a part of Hampden until retirement," Eric shared. "I respected that about Sergeant Bruno." An assessment center evaluation confirmed Bruno's qualifications, aligning with the board's view that he embodies the dedication required for the role.

Capt. Massafarro earned praise for his comprehensive experience and forward-thinking action plan, deemed "a little bit overly ambitious" but valuable for establishing high goals. Sgt. Ivonne was also commended as an excellent option, with the board suggesting the choice could introduce fresh perspectives while honoring Hampden's community roots. "It was a very difficult decision... almost to the point where it's overload," one member admitted after extensive deliberation.

The 3-0 vote authorized Town Administrator Brian to notify all candidates and issue a conditional offer to Bruno at the advertised salary rate. Brian pledged to reach out "tomorrow," aiming for finalization by next Tuesday's meeting to expedite the transition from interim leadership. "I like his chances," a board member quipped regarding the exams.

This appointment addresses the leadership void left by the retirements and positions Hampden's police force – responsive to a close-knit inland community – for continued stability. The chief will oversee a modest department, prioritizing service and local engagement.

The police chief selection anchored a packed agenda that included warrant preparations for an upcoming special town meeting at 6:30 p.m., HVAC replacements at the senior center (estimated $190,000–$250,000, with potential rebates) and library ($220,000 estimate), vehicle acquisitions like cruisers and a highway loader, financial transfers, and updates on the new town hall's move-in targeted for mid-November. Discussions touched on volunteer reliance in facilities maintenance, a federal grant shortfall for the Council on Aging, and Community Preservation Act funding for a historical columbarium.

Residents can follow the chief's formal onboarding at forthcoming meetings. For Hampden, Bruno's selection promises a steady hand attuned to the town's unique rhythm.
