A Bittersweet Farewell: Bub's BBQ Closes Its Iconic Sunderland Doors After 46 Years
In the heart of the Pioneer Valley, few spots hold as much nostalgic weight as Bub's BBQ on Amherst Road in Sunderland. For 46 years, this family-run barbecue joint has been dishing out smoky ribs, pulled pork, and classic sides to generations of locals, UMass students, alumni, and families.
Now, the owners have shared some tough news: the building that has housed Bub's since 1979 has been sold, and the restaurant will close its doors at the end of February 2026.
In a heartfelt post on the restaurant's Facebook page, the owners—a husband-and-wife team—explained the difficult decision. They shared that they've worked tirelessly—consulting banks, lawyers, contractors, and electricians—to try to purchase and repair the aging property. But the sale price proved too steep, compounded by extensive repairs needed after decades of wear.
Adding to the personal strain, the couple has also been navigating a diagnosis of unexplained infertility, bringing significant financial and emotional challenges during this period.
"With the building needing thousands of dollars of work and our unexpected cost of starting a family, we have decided it would be best to find Bubs a new home," they wrote.
Despite the closure of the current location, the message is clear: this isn't goodbye to Bub's BBQ—it's a "see you later."
The owners expressed deep pride in carrying on the restaurant's legacy, which dates back to its founding in 1979. They've cherished meeting longtime customers, hearing stories from decades of meals, and seeing UMass alumni return with their own kids to keep traditions alive.
For now, the focus is on making the most of the final weeks. The owners invited everyone to stop by, enjoy one last BBQ fix, reminisce about memories in the building, and help send it off properly.
Catering services will continue uninterrupted, so if you've got an event or party coming up, reach out—Bub's is still ready to smoke for you. This closure marks the end of an era for the current spot, but the spirit of Bub's—great barbecue, community warmth, and Valley pride—endures. The owners are actively seeking a new home to relaunch and continue the tradition.
If you've got stories from Bub's over the years, we'd love to hear them in the comments or via email. In the meantime, if you're in the 413 and craving that signature sauce, head to Sunderland soon—the clock is ticking.
